It is true that I have no way of knowing if the quintessence of genius rests within my grasp; but I feel that it does. If not, then my experiments have surely been of great benefit to my cause. To have pieced together a psychological profile of my guest, which has prompted me to extract the fluids from his frontal lobes, has been useful to me to say the least.
In the first place, it has provided me with an insight into the workings of his mind which has provided me, in turn, with an insight into the workings of my own. There is something inordinately complex about our psychology, something that runs much deeper than I thought. In the context of science, complexity is a basis for uncertainty which, in itself, is a basis for extreme danger. To infuse the brain with additional fluids is the surest way of causing its irreparable harm, which I know to be true under normal circumstances of linear transaction. In the case of myself, I had thought to retain an immunity against collateral damage because of my Demi-Thurganic resistance to standard biochemical disruptions. It is apparent, however, that there are certain risks that must be assessed in relation to the likelihood of their occurrence. There is no telling what would happen to me if things went wrong; and I suspect that, by injecting myself with the serum, I might transform myself into a virtual monster.
Which brings me to another point.
Let us be sure that, in our case, we are dealing with a special kind of mental fabricârather than facultyâwhich has evolved, I believe, from a precursory level of material substantiation. What I mean to say is that the Oily Well is real (that it happened) in more ways than one, and that it coincides with my own experiences of peculiar recollection, which in the past I have attributed, falsely, to dreams; whereas it seems clear to me now that these dreams are not the symbolic reproductions of our innermost fears and states of mind.
No.
These are things that happened as occasions of the fullest immersion of existential states, which exist, now, as inversions of a primary state of existential definition (which is to say that the concrete reality of the Oily Well was internalised as if through a vacuum between two versions of the same world). I may even go as far as to suggest that the Oily Well is a totemic memory deriving from an initial phase of sensory interaction with concrete forms which has undergone its existential transformation.
But, for the moment, allow me to catch my breath, for I am both enthused and dumfounded by this discovery in ways I cannot express without adequate reflection.
In the meantime, let us consider the serum.
I have decided upon the formula of the serum and am lacking only the realisation of its blend. My laboratory is prepared for the procedure, and it remains for me only to prepare myself for what is to come.
